There are many individual differences that can affect motivation in the workplace, some of these are –

- Social Skills
- Level of Knowledge
Effective management requires that individual behaviour differences be recognised and taken into consideration. In detail three important individual differences that affect motivation in the workplace are personality, attitudes and values –
In every organisation a variety of different personalities exist. Managers who know how to spot employees with personality abilities will make an effort to use these to provide a better quality service and be more productive.
For example an outgoing employee who is friendly and chatty will be good in a customer services position dealing with customers.
Personality contributes in part to workplace behaviour, and encompasses a person’s feelings, thoughts and behavioural patterns. Each employee has a unique personality and not every personality is suited for every job position, so it’s important to recognize personality traits and pair employees with the duties that fit their personalities the best. This can lead to increased productivity and job satisfaction, helping your business function more efficiently.
Getting to know your employee’s personality will keep them productive by understanding what motivates them.
Attitude can have a huge effect on an organisation motivation. Bad attitude can be demotivating and create conflict, whilst a positive attitude can motivate colleagues to be more productive. Attitude is a personal choice and expression and comes from within. Enthusiasm is key; it creates a positive attitude for one to drive on to the end goal.
Values are important part of an employee’s motivation. Organisations that have identified and respect employee’s values by the way they want to live, benefit from greater motivation from their employee’s in return.
Values such as integrity, empowerment, persistence, equality, discipline and accountability, when truly integrated in the culture of the organization, are powerful motivators.
Having a good understanding of your employee’s individual differences in the workplace will radically improve motivation in the following areas – Productivity, Creativity and Performance.
